Editors Note - October 2020
As I write, the Government has been introducing some new control measures to increase social distancing and prevent the spread, once again, of Covid 19. This seems counterintuitive in many ways as schools are now reopened and there are moves to encourage people back to work. Good to know that the virus knows the difference between those types of gatherings. Sarcasm aside, October is of course the month of Halloween and it has been noticeable in the last few years that it is becoming more popular in our local area. Both Chineham and Sherfield Park have had some excellent displays ranging from the simple to the amazingly detailed, and there has been a notable lack of problems with participants seemingly embracing the unwritten rule of no decorations/lights, no participation.
So what does Halloween 2020 look like? Does trick or treating count as a social gathering? It’s hard not to feel that it’s against the spirit (no pun intended) of the rules, but equally hard to feel there’s a huge risk in a wrapped sweet or two (especially if we all embrace spooky masks). I must admit though, I don’t feel comfortable taking my little monsters, and we’ll be sitting this one out. Perhaps by the actual date there will be firm rules in place and we won’t face the choice at all.
