Buskers set to bring back summer street tunes

Buskers and street performers are being invited to make music and bring some much-needed entertainment to Basingstoke town centre as shoppers return.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council is offering street artists, individuals and groups, aged over 14, the opportunity to perform to shoppers in the town centre on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the summer.

As part of a series of COVID-safe outdoor arts and theatrical productions, ahead of Basingstoke Festival which starts on Friday 25 June, buskers will be given a time to perform and can collect donations in the normal way at official busk-stops in three designated areas at the Top of The Town.

Social distancing measures will be in place to keep street performers and shoppers safe and for those unable to soak in the performances live, they will be shared on the Basingstoke Festival social media channels.

Cabinet Member for Communities, Planning and Infrastructure Cllr Simon Bound said: “It’s great to see shoppers returning to the town centre following the latest unlocking of COVID restrictions and we have been working hard to organise a host of outdoor activities for everyone to enjoy.

“We are lucky to have a number of talented performers and are keen to give them an opportunity to showcase their work and perform live to crowds in the town centre to give residents and visitors a much-needed boost. If you are interested in performing, please get in touch with us at festival@basingstoke.gov.uk.”
