Extraordinary act of kindness after homeless charity freezer fails

A Basingstoke couple have stepped in with an extraordinary offer after the freezer at The Camrose Centre - the local homeless charity - failed, destroying the contents. It was a devastating blow to the Centre, which supplies hot meals to local homeless people three days per week. Camrose staff discovered the freezer had broken down last month, destroying the contents valued at around £60. Support Worker Chris Jenner used the local Facebook page 'Spotted Basingstoke' to ask for advice on how to repair the freezer, and was overwhelmed with the offers of help from members of the public. One reply came from a local couple (who wish to remain anonymous), offering not only to buy The Camrose a brand new freezer; but also to fill it with frozen food. Centre Manager Clare Farrow commented, “the new freezer is now in place, and will be put to good use once the Centre reopens after lockdown. We are so grateful to the donors for their incredible generosity; and also to the members of Spotted Basingstoke for all their offers of help at our time of need”. The couple have since paid a socially distanced visit to The Camrose to meet staff and see first hand how the centre is run. Donations can be made to support Camrose via their website https://thecamrosecentre.org
