Holocaust Memorial Day - Wednesday 27 January 2021

Next week residents across Basingstoke and Deane are being encouraged to remember those who lost their lives during the Holocaust and other acts of genocide. Following the introduction of a new national lockdown, The Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane Cllr Diane Taylor will lead virtual tributes on behalf of the borough on Holocaust Memorial Day. Members of the public are encouraged to join the Mayor throughout the day from 9am on Wednesday 27 January to remember those who suffered and died in the genocides, and those still living who lost family, friends and loved ones.

Holocaust Memorial Day has been commemorated worldwide since 2000 on the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp, in 1945. The theme for this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day is ‘Be the light in the darkness’. The theme encourages all to reflect on how, whilst people can be so merciless to fellow human beings, we can instead seek to respect mankind, resist the darkness and light the way with kindness.

A national Holocaust Memorial Day ceremony will take place virtually and is available to view live from 7pm on Wednesday 27 January at www.hmd.org.uk/uk-holocaust-memorial-day-2021-ceremony/ The Mayor, Cllr Taylor, said: “It is disappointing that we will not be able to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day together side by side this year, but we must all stay at home during this time to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and protect the NHS. Holocaust Memorial Day is an opportunity to remember the millions of people who have been murdered or whose lives have been changed beyond recognition during the Holocaust and in subsequent genocides. We must honour those who died and also the survivors and remember the lessons of their experiences. Please join me in remembering them by standing still at 10am at home on Holocaust Memorial Day for a two minute silence and do follow @BasingMayor on Twitter and @BasingstokeMayor on Facebook as I, together with the Chaplain and friends, pay tribute to all the victims and survivors.”
